How Paintless Dent Repair Works — And Why It's the Right Choice for Hail Damage
If a hailstorm just hit your car — or you're trying to understand your repair options — this guide covers everything you need to know about paintless dent repair (PDR): what it is, how it works, what it can fix, and why it almost always outperforms a traditional body shop for hail damage.
Written by Nate Kral, owner of Hail Valet, a family-owned PDR company founded in 2014 and based in Irving, TX, serving all of DFW.

What is paintless dent repair?
Paintless dent repair (PDR) is a method of removing dents from a vehicle's body panels without using paint, filler, or sanding. Technicians access the back side of each panel and use precision tools to push dents back to their original shape — leaving the factory finish completely intact.
PDR is the industry standard for hail damage repair because it restores the vehicle fully without touching the factory paint. That matters for three reasons: your manufacturer warranty stays valid, your vehicle's resale value is preserved, and the result is indistinguishable from the original surface.
Traditional body shop repair — sanding, priming, repainting — is the alternative when paint has been damaged. But for hail damage, where the paint is typically intact and only the metal is dented, PDR is faster, more accurate, and less expensive.
How does paintless dent repair work, step by step?
How does the PDR process work?
PDR involves four steps: (1) professional damage assessment using a light board, (2) gaining access to the back of the affected panel, (3) using precision metal rods to push each dent back to factory shape through dozens of small controlled movements, and (4) a final light-board inspection to confirm every dent is fully restored.
1. Damage assessment
A trained technician uses a specialized light board to map every dent — including ones invisible in normal light. This step determines whether PDR is appropriate and exactly how many repair cycles each panel requires. At Hail Valet, this evaluation is free and we come to your location across DFW.
2. Panel access
Technicians carefully remove trim, interior panels, or lighting assemblies as needed to reach the back side of each dented panel. This varies by vehicle make and which panels are affected.
3. The repair
Using precision rods and pushing tools, the technician applies controlled pressure from behind each dent — making 20 to 40 individual movements per dent until the metal returns exactly to its factory position. This is skilled work that takes time. Speed is not the goal; accuracy is.
4. Final inspection
The light board comes back out. Every repaired panel is re-examined. The vehicle isn't released until the repair meets the standard.
What can PDR fix — and what can't it fix?
What types of damage can paintless dent repair fix?
PDR effectively repairs most hail dents (including large ones), door dings, and minor dents where the paint is intact. It is not suitable when paint has cracked or chipped at the impact point, when a dent sits directly on a sharp body crease, or when the metal has stretched beyond what PDR can restore.
The good news: the vast majority of hail damage qualifies for PDR. A professional evaluation will tell you definitively — and a trustworthy shop will be honest with you if a different approach is needed.

Does PDR affect my insurance rates?
Will filing a hail damage claim raise my insurance rates?
No. Hail damage filed under comprehensive auto insurance is a zero-fault weather event. It does not raise your insurance rates. For qualifying vehicles, the repair may cost nothing beyond your deductible — or nothing at all if you've already met it.
We coordinate your entire insurance claim at no extra charge — paperwork, adjuster communication, and rental vehicle arrangement if needed. You schedule the evaluation; we handle everything else.
How long does PDR take?

At Hail Valet, most hail damage repairs are completed in 1 to 2 days. We built proprietary software to streamline scheduling and repair processing — significantly faster than the industry average of one to three weeks.
